Chicago Marathon

Diabetic Running Mama

Erika trained harder for this marathon than her first one, Akron. She In her training, she ran 3 20 milers. What she could not train for was her blood sugar being over 300 all morning before the race and having to start the race in that shape.

She was disappointed, but had to stop at mile 16/17 because it would not go down. She stopped in medical tents at miles 10 and between 16/17. It was there that she knew she needed fluids via IV to get her sugar down. They took her by ambulance to a local hospital where she received two bags of fluids.

I am very proud of her. She has proven that she can do whatever she puts her mind to. Just because diabetes got the best of her this day does not mean she failed.

We did have a good time the whole weekend. Brittany and Marc were our hosts and we experienced more of the city than we have been able to in previous visits. Another fine Korean meal by Britt and Marc, meeting new friends and finally experiencing the Superdawg were among the highlights.
